Pre-Revolutionary Queer: Gay Art and Culture Before Stonewall October 24, 2008 - February 14, 2009 On June 27, 1969 a riot broke out at the Stonewall Inn in New York's Greenwich Village. For the police it was a routine raid on a gay bar, but this time the patrons decided to resist, setting off three days of protest that are now credited with launching the modern gay rights movement.

Sex and Presidential Politics: Selections from the Kinsey Institute Collections

From bawdy political cartoons to insightful Playboy interviews, the Kinsey Institute collections include a surprising number of materials relating to the modern presidency. Viewed together, they offer a unique perspective of evolving societal attitudes regarding sex and the White House.

“Women of Pleasure,” the winter exhibition in the Kinsey Institute Gallery, explores the depiction of women in 18th and 19th century European erotic art and literature, using artworks, artifacts, photographs, books, and other materials from the Institute’s extensive collections. Highlights of the exhibit include a pair of engravings by British satirist William Hogarth, a selection of hand-colored lithographs from France , and several rare editions of Fanny Hill; or Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure, John Cleland’s 1749 erotic novel.

Exhibit by artist Robb Stone at the Kinsey Institute, Morrison Hall, on the IU-Bloomington campus: a collection of photo and text-based collage that explore the erotic world of online social networking. All artworks were made specifically for this show and include actual images from websites such as Manhunt and Craigslist, where gay men can post profiles and look for potential partners. Stone describes his experience of sex in the age of the Internet, raising questions about self-objectification, wish-fulfillment, and the implications for love.

The unique occasion is designed to promote sexual health through art.
Artists from the community will display artwork made from or that
includes latex barrier devices such as condoms, dental dams, and gloves.
The display is designed to promote in a creative way the use of latex
devices to reduce the risk of transmission of HIV and other sexually
transmitted infections. The winning pieces will be donated to a silent action to raise funds for Positive Link of Bloomington.
