Anti-Gay Marriage Amendment to be Re-introduced in Special SessionSubmitted by John Clower on June 14, 2009 - 4:29pm.
From: Indiana Equality (www.indianaequality.org) The Indiana Family Institute has announced that Representative Eric Turner and Representative David Cheatham will attempt to resurrect Indiana’s Marriage Discrimination Amendment during the Special Session of the Indiana General Assembly. The bill has now been denied by legislators for three years running. The purpose of the special legislative session is to sort out Indiana’s state budget. In an email to their members, the Indiana Family Institute (IFI) acknowledges that the “stated purpose of the time-limited session is corrective (to adopt the budget they were supposed to adopt during the regular session)”. Nevertheless, IFI has openly taken this opportunity to fundraise at the expense of Indiana taxpayers. In defense of his actions, Rep. Cheatham stated “values are being taken away from us in other states and cities”. Rep. Cheatham did not specify which Hoosier cities were being affected. Indiana Equality Action abhors this attempt to place IFI’s discriminatory mission in front of the needs of Indiana citizens. Indiana Equality calls on our elected officials to focus on the matter at hand: our state budget. Indiana Equality Action urges you to e-mail House Minority Leader Brian Bosma and Speaker Pat Bauer, asking them to reject this nonsense brought about by the Indiana Family Institute, Rep. Turner, and Rep. Cheatham. Representative Brian Bosma Speaker Pat Bauer In The Marriage Discrimination Amendment, which has not yet been officially introduced, could be offered as early as Monday, June 15, 2009. Watch your email and stay tuned to the Indiana Equality blog and websites for more information as it becomes available. |
