01/18/2008 - 5:00pm 01/18/2008 - 7:00pm Etc/GMT-5 “Women of Pleasure,” the winter exhibition in the Kinsey Institute Gallery, explores the depiction of women in 18th and 19th century European erotic art and literature, using artworks, artifacts, photographs, books, and other materials from the Institute’s extensive collections. Highlights of the exhibit include a pair of engravings by British satirist William Hogarth, a selection of hand-colored lithographs from France , and several rare editions of Fanny Hill; or Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure, John Cleland’s 1749 erotic novel. Women of Pleasure will be on view in the Kinsey Institute Gallery from January 18 through April 4, 2008. An opening reception for the exhibit will be held on Friday, January 18, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. This event is free and open to the public. On Friday, February 22, University of Illinois historian Dana Rabin will give a talk titled “The Sorceress, the Servant, and the Stays: Sexuality, Race, and Politics in Eighteenth-Century Britain.” The lecture will be held at 5:30 pm in Morrison Hall 007. A guided tour of the “Women of Pleasure” exhibition will follow the lecture. This event is offered as part of ArtsWeek 2008. The Kinsey Institute Gallery is open 2 to 4 pm weekdays.
