Questionaire responses from Bloomington Common Council, At Large candidates.
Bloomington Common Council, At Large | Tim Mayer (D) | Clifford Meadows (R) | Andy Ruff (D) | Susan Sandberg (D) | | Support. I supported this legislation and will continue to support it. | Support. | Support. | Support. As a progressive council member, I will support going forward, not backward, in ensuring social justice for all! | 2. If elected, would you consider revising the HRO to make it mandatory rather than voluntary to comply with LGBT nondiscrimination protections, following the example of the Indianapolis HRO? | Yes. In principle, I support mandatory compliance. I would like to research the concept further, however. | Unsure. Honestly have no knowledge of Indianapolis HRO. | Yes. If consistent with state law, Bloomington can certainly be as progressive as Indy. | Yes. I would consider taking a look and following the lead of Indianapolis—again, because it is the fair thing to do. | 3. If elected, would you support or oppose the current policy of extending benefits to the domestic partners of Bloomington city employees? | Support. I am in complete support. | Support. | Support. | Support. Absolutely! | 4. Because same-sex couples have limited access to legal recognition of their relationship and their families, a domestic partner registry can be used to assist employers who wish to make domestic partner benefits available to their employees. Would you support or oppose creation of a Domestic Partner Registry for Bloomington? | Support. | Support. | Support. | Support. If this provides a benefit for same-sex couples, I am in favor. | 5. An Equal Benefits Ordinance would require certain city contractors who provide health care benefits to spouses to offer the same benefits to the domestic partners of their employees. Such an ordinance would be applicable to opposite-sex and same-sex couples. Currently, Bloomington does not have such an ordinance. Would you support or oppose passage of an Equal Benefits Ordinance for Bloomington? | Unsure. Without specifics, this is difficult to answer. I am in full support of equal health care for all, though I am not sure that this will solve the problem for all. | Unsure. | Support, consistent with state laws and other applicable requirements. | Support. This may have its challengers, but in as much influence as the City Council has in such legislation, I would be willing to try. | Statement about LGBT Rights (optional) If you wish, please write a maximum of 75 words on how you will promote a safe, supportive community in Bloomington and throughout Monroe County for all people, including LGBT people and their families. Meadows: By standing by all current ordinances and if elected serve on Human Rights Commission, if the current opening is still available. Sandberg: Continuing discrimination against the LGBT community is simply not acceptable in a progressive and inclusive society. This is the civil rights arena of our time, and community leaders everywhere must take a firm stand in promoting the rights of LGBT citizens. Failure to do so is a moral failure. As a member of the Bloomington City Council, I will not stand for discrimination in any form—the very idea offends me.
